QR Code Payment Scam

Introduction

With the rapid growth of digital payments in India, QR code payments have become extremely common. Platforms like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm allow users to pay instantly by scanning a QR code.

While QR payments are convenient, scammers are exploiting them to steal money from unsuspecting users. QR code scams are increasing across India in 2025–2026 because many people misunderstand how QR payments actually work.

A QR code is meant to send money, not receive money. However, scammers trick victims into scanning malicious QR codes that initiate payments instead of receiving funds.

This guide explains how QR code scams work, common tactics used by cybercriminals, and how you can protect yourself from becoming a victim.

How QR Code Payment Scams Work

A typical QR code scam follows this pattern:

  1. Scammer contacts victim pretending to buy something.

  2. Scammer says they will pay through UPI.

  3. They send a QR code claiming it is required to “receive money”.

  4. Victim scans the QR code.

  5. Instead of receiving money, the victim unknowingly approves a payment.

Many victims realize the scam only after the money has already been transferred.

Common QR Code Scam Techniques

1. OLX / Marketplace Scam

Scammers contact sellers on marketplaces and say they want to purchase the item. They then send a QR code saying it is required for payment.

Once scanned, the victim accidentally pays the scammer.

2. Refund QR Code Scam

The scammer claims to be from a company and says a refund is pending. They send a QR code and ask the victim to scan it to receive the refund.

Instead, money is debited.

3. Fake Business QR Codes

Fraudsters sometimes paste their QR codes over legitimate ones at shops, parking areas, and restaurants.

When customers scan them, money goes directly to the scammer’s account.

4. Customer Support QR Scams

Fake support agents claim they will help solve payment issues. They ask the victim to scan a QR code to verify the account.

Again, the victim unknowingly authorizes a payment.

Warning Signs of QR Code Scams

Look out for these red flags:

• Someone asks you to scan a QR code to receive money
• The person pressures you to scan immediately
• They ask you to approve a payment request
• The QR code appears from an unknown source
• A stranger insists on using QR payment for refunds

Remember:

You NEVER need to scan a QR code to receive money.

Real-Life Example

A seller lists a phone online.

A buyer contacts them and says:

“Please scan this QR code to receive the advance payment.”

The seller scans the code and enters the UPI PIN.

Instead of receiving ₹5,000, the seller pays ₹5,000.

How to Stay Safe from QR Code Scams

1. Never Scan QR Codes for Receiving Payments

To receive money, simply share your UPI ID or phone number.

2. Verify the Payment Screen

Always read the message carefully before entering your UPI PIN.

3. Do Not Trust Unknown Buyers

Many scammers pretend to be buyers.

4. Avoid Public QR Codes

Always confirm the merchant name before paying.

5. Use Official Apps Only

Use trusted apps like PhonePe or Google Pay.
