Fake Customer Care Scam

Introduction

Fake customer care scams have become one of the most common cyber frauds in India. Scammers impersonate customer support representatives from banks, telecom companies, or e-commerce platforms.

They often target users of companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Paytm.

Their goal is simple: steal your banking information or gain remote access to your phone.

How Fake Customer Care Scams Work

  1. Victim searches for customer care number online.

  2. Scammer has posted a fake number on the internet.

  3. Victim calls the number thinking it is official support.

  4. The scammer asks for sensitive details or asks the victim to install a remote access app.

Once access is granted, scammers can steal money instantly.

Common Techniques Used

1. Google Search Scam

Scammers post fake customer care numbers on websites or forums. Victims searching for help end up calling the scammer instead of the official company.

2. Remote Access Apps

Scammers ask victims to install apps such as:

AnyDesk
TeamViewer

These apps allow criminals to control the victim’s phone.

3. OTP Theft

Fake agents request OTPs claiming they are verifying the account.

This allows them to complete transactions.

Warning Signs

• Support agent asks for OTP
• They ask you to install remote apps
• They request UPI PIN or card details
• The support number is found on an unknown website

Legitimate companies never ask for OTP or PIN.

How to Stay Safe

  1. Always get support numbers from official websites

  2. Never share OTP or UPI PIN

  3. Do not install remote access apps for customer support

  4. Use official apps for help

  5. Verify company websites carefully
