Electricity Bill Scam

Introduction

Electricity bill scams are rapidly increasing across India. In this scam, fraudsters send messages claiming that the victim’s electricity connection will be disconnected due to unpaid bills.

The message usually contains a phone number or link.

Victims who contact the number are manipulated into making payments or installing malicious apps.

How the Scam Works

Step 1: Fake SMS Alert

The victim receives a message:

“Your electricity will be disconnected tonight due to pending bill. Contact immediately.”

Step 2: Fake Support Agent

When the victim calls the number, a scammer pretends to be from the electricity department.

Step 3: Remote Access App

The scammer asks the victim to install a remote access app such as TeamViewer.

This allows them to access the victim’s phone and bank account.

Step 4: Money Theft

The scammer then performs unauthorized transactions.
